Dr. Haim J. Wolfson is a Professor of Computer Science and the Incumbent of the Pionkowski Chair in Computer Aided Drug Design at Tel Aviv University. He joined the Tel Aviv Universuty School of Computer Science in 1989, was its Head in 2002-2004 and in 2006-2011 served as the Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences, which includes the Schools of Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry and the department of Earth Sciences. He held visiting positions in New York University, the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center (Yorktown Heights, NY) and the Institute of Advanced Studies (IHES) near Paris.
Prof. Wolfson is a co-developer of the "Geometric Hashing" paradigm for Model based Object Recognition in Computer Vision, which is one of the leading geometric pattern discovery techniques up-to-date. In the early 1990's he pioneered the introduction of Computer Vision based methodologies into Structural Bioinformatics. His research has since specialized in the development of particularly efficient algorithms for the modeling and analysis of protein structures, large multimolecular complexes and computer aided drug design.
Prof. Wolfson has published about 200 papers, which have been widely cited and has supervised 18 Ph.D. and 35 M.Sc. students. Prof. Wolfson is the laureate of the Technion Juludan Prize for the introduction of Exact Sciences methodologies into the Bio-Medical Sciences, and of the IEEE Computer Society Helmholtz Prize for the paper "Geometric Hashing: A general and Efficient Model-Based Recognition Scheme", which "had a significant impact on Computer Vision research".
